Hyundai History
Hyundai was established at the in 1967 in South Korea, producing an ever-expanding lineup of SUVs and cars. It has grown to become one of the biggest vehicle manufacturers in the world. As the quality of its cars increased, its offerings have as well which include everything from sub-compacts and luxury sedans to sports cars.
While your car is made from components that have a proven track record of safety and efficiency, your Hyundai warranty protects you from the "Oops!" in life. The warranty associated with your particular model will vary based on where the vehicle was purchased. Hyundai vehicles come with a variety of warranties, each of which protect different aspects of your car.
Hyundai Warranties
Any Hyundai vehicle purchased within the past ten years will include the following warranties:
- PowerTrain protection
- Limited Basic warranty
- Additional Warranties
Ten Year, 100,000 Mile PowerTrain Protection Plan
The PowerTrain protection plan is designed to protect your car's vital components. These components were designed to outlive you - and your car. The warranty covers the repair and replacement of "powertrain components" that were installed in your vehicle at the time of purchase. The Hyundai warranty protects your vehicle from factory defect. Effective with 2003 models and above, the PowerTrain protection plan only applies to the original owner. Additionally, this warranty is not applicable to Hyundai's that are in a commercial fleet.
Five Year, 60,000 Mile New Vehicle Hyundai Warranty
The most important Hyundai warranty is the 5-year, 60,000-mile new vehicle warranty (typically, manufacturers include 12,000 miles per year of coverage.) This warranty is standard on all new Hyundai vehicles. It only covers products and parts that were installed by Hyundai and excludes third party components and service. Hyundai warrants the vehicle to ensure that all of their models are free from defect caused by material or factory workmanship.
While the Hyundai limited warranty is valid for five years, coverage varies based on the specific component. The warranty is only valid as long as the owner is using the vehicle as defined in the normal use clause. Additionally, owners must maintain their vehicle as outlined in the owner manual. Failure to meet these requirements may result in the cancellation of the warranty.
Additional Warranties
In addition to the Powertrain and limited basic warranties discussed above, Hyundai offers the following additional warranties for new cars
- Twelve Month, 12,000 Mile Replacement Parts and Accessory Limited Warranty
- Seven Year, Unlimited Mileage Anti-Perforation Warranty
- Five Year, Unlimited Mileage Twenty-Four Hour Roadside Assistance Warranty
- Eight Year, 80,000 Mile Federal Emissions and Performance Warranty
- Seven Year, 70,000 Mile California Emissions Control Systems Warranty
What is NOT Covered
The warranty does not cover:
- abnormal wear and tear
- service adjustments
- routine maintenance
- preventative maintenance
- negligence
- deterioration and tires
The Hyundai warranty will not replace a vehicle that is deemed "total loss" by an insurer. Altering the mileage or using non-genuine parts will void the warranty. Problems and issues that arise due to factors beyond Hyundai's control are not covered.
Hyundai Reliability
Before making any decision, research your specific model and year to ensure reliability. Certain cars are known to be unreliable, making the extended protection decision a no-brainer. Check out the the U.S News and World Report. for current reliability ratings.
Another easy to find out about a product's reliability in the age of the Internet is to check with a community of people that have the same product. People in these groups tend to be very outspoken. In the case of automobiles one such community is Edmunds.com.

Extended Vehicle Warranty
While the manufacturer's Hyundai warranty is a solid package, the program does not protect your entire vehicle. An extended vehicle warranty or mechanical breakdown protection is a valuable asset and layer of protection for your automobile. The decision whether to purchase the extended warranty or mechanical breakdown protection may not be so easy for you. After all, extended protection does cost money.

Do I Need Hyundai Extended Warranty Protection for my Hyundai vehicle?
While Hyundai vehicles have a great safety and reliability record, you never know what can happen. For road warriors, busy families, and those who cannot afford unexpected expenses, a Hyundai extended warranty or mechanical breakdown protection is a great option. The extended protection can help minimize any shocking repair bills that could arise during your ownership period.
Additionally, drivers who travel more than 12,000 miles per year should carefully consider the purchase of an extended coverage plan. Most manufacturer plans assume you drive 12,000 or less per year. Choosing to purchase extended protection for your Hyundai is a personal decision. However, here are some things to consider:
- The age and mileage of your Hyundai
- The reliability record of your particular Hyundai model
- How many miles you drive
- How long you plan to own your Hyundai
- Your risk tolerance
- Your financial ability to pay for unexpected repairs

If you decide that extended protection is a good "bet" for you then be sure to purchase it before the original Hyundai limited basic warranty expires (the 5 Year/60,000 Mile warranty). The sooner you do it the less it will cost you. If the Hyundai warranty expires, your options may be limited. However, you don't have to purchase a Hyundai extended warranty – there is another option: Mechanical Breakdown Protection.
Options for Extended Protection
You have two basic options when it comes to extended protection for your Hyundai.
- Genuine Hyundai Extended Warranty
- Third Party Mechanical Breakdown Protection (In California: Mechanical Breakdown Insurance)
The extended Hyundai warranty is only offered by the manufacturer and is generally sold through the dealership. Mechanical Breakdown Protection may be purchased from a third party company. Coverage between the two options is usually comparable.
The main difference between the options is the price and the fact that mechanical breakdown protection lets you have your service done at any repair facility. The Hyundai extended warranty requires that you service your vehicle at the dealership or other Hyundai authorized repair facilities. This tends to limit your options. For example, the nearest factory authorized facility may not be convenient for you. Another example is that you may have a favorite independent mechanic that will not be able to service your vehicle under the manufacturer extended warranty.
When purchasing the plan from a dealer, you will always pay more. The primary benefit of a Hyundai extended warranty is the ability to add the coverage to your financing package however; this could add hundreds - even thousands - of dollars to your overall financing agreement. Obviously, this is only an option if you're buying the extended protection at the time you're buying the vehicle.
Mechanical breakdown protection plans tend to offer more value and can be found at a lower price with similar or better coverage. However, it is extremely important that you purchase mechanical breakdown protection from a reputable company.
The Hyundai extended warranty is a solid choice. However mechanical breakdown protection from a reputable third party may serve you best if you need the flexibility of choosing your own service location or personal mechanic.
